British Social Attitudes Project
There is limited knowledge about public awareness of and support for the UK Armed Forces. The British Social Attitudes project has three aims. First, to conduct a literature review of published evidence concerning public opinion and support for the UK Armed Forces. Second, to perform secondary quantitative analyses of the British Social Attitudes Survey (2025) data, investigate awareness of and support for the Armed Forces Covenant and perceptions about the Remembrance Poppy amongst the UK general public and Armed Forces Community. Third, to develop a question module for use in the 2027 British Social Attitudes Survey addressing knowledge, attitudes toward, and support for the UK Armed Forces.
Aim
The aim of this research is to understand British public attitudes towards the Armed Forces, including their awareness of the Armed Forces Covenant and support for its principles and perceptions of the Remembrance Poppy.
Method
Quantitative and review methods are used to investigate public knowledge of and attitudes toward the UK Armed Forces.
