Combating military obesity: stigma's persistent impact on operational readiness

Abstract: Obesity poses a complex challenge to recruitment, readiness, and retention within the U.S. Armed Forces. Amidst an escalating military recruiting crisis, pre-accession weight loss programs are helping services meet enlistment goals. Rapid and sustained recurrence of obesity across all services, ranks, and positions now poses a dire threat, especially for at-risk populations and those in critical combat roles. To effectively tackle the military obesity crisis, the Department of Defense must significantly improve its research and reporting. In the meantime, replacing military appearance regulations with evidence-based health policies can facilitate a shift to treating obesity as a chronic disease rather than an administrative checkmark.
