Abstract: Suicide, though rare in the UK Armed Forces, has claimed 287 lives between 2003 and 2022, with recent trends showing elevated risk among Army men, particularly those aged 20–24. While overall suicide rates are lower than the general population, protective factors inherent in service life diminish post-service, leaving younger veterans at increased risk. Key drivers include mental health disorders, prior self-harm, early life adversity, and life crises, while operational deployment may offer protective effects. In response, the Armed Forces published the 2023 Suicide Prevention Strategy and Action Plan, emphasizing stigma reduction, safety planning, improved access to support, and information sharing. Drawing on global insights, this collaborative approach aims to address systemic risk factors and prevent future tragedies.
