Abstract: This a Letter to the Editor 'On a Review of Auditory Processing Assessments in the Veterans Affairs Health Care System (Papesh et al., 2023)'. I, the author of this letter, would like to congratulate Papesh et al. (2023) on a very interesting and important article. The authors reviewed the utilization of auditory processing assessments for 100 patients within the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) health care system. In this article, an auditory processing disorder (APD) was considered essentially synonymous with functional hearing difficulties (FHDs). The authors used their review to attempt to answer the question, “How are clinicians dealing with the significant ambiguity of clinical care for patients with FHDs?” The patients were young to middle age. Most of the patients had pure-tone thresholds ≤ 25 dB HL. Sixty-seven patients had a previous traumatic brain injury (TBI) diagnosis. Across the chart notes, all but two (98%) mentioned difficulties understanding speech in the presence of background noise.
