Abstract: According to the Canadian Medical Association Journal, military veterans in Canada experience chronic pain at a higher rate than the civilian population, with 41% of veterans living with chronic pain. Additionally, 63% of veterans with chronic pain also have a mental health condition. The military culture, which emphasizes collectivism and a "mission-before-self" mindset, can impact veterans' experiences of pain. Veterans may face barriers to care and may distrust health care institutions, particularly if they have experienced moral injury, discrimination, or violence during their service. It is important for physicians to be transparent and build trust with veterans by addressing delays and using appropriate language when discussing their military service. Veterans may also face challenges related to stigma and concerns about weakness when seeking help for their pain.
