Abstract: The Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) emphasizes the importance of equipping health practitioners to navigate its unique and complex healthcare arrangements to better serve the veteran community. Recognizing challenges faced by clinicians with limited veteran-specific experience, DVA has implemented numerous initiatives over the past 18 months to enhance awareness, education, and collaboration. These include integrating veteran health content into the RACGP Fellowship curriculum, launching the Veterans Healthcare eLearning Platform (VETs HeLP) for continuing professional development, and introducing standardized Veteran HealthPathways for GPs. Other efforts involve streamlined compensation forms, printable quick guides, and support for psychiatry registrars specializing in military and veteran mental health. To prioritize veterans' mental health, DVA appointed a Chief Psychiatrist and expanded partnerships with services like Open Arms Veterans & Families Counselling. Guided by recommendations from the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide, DVA continues to work toward a veteran-ready health sector, fostering multidisciplinary care and improving outcomes for veterans and their families.
