The phenomenology of posttraumatic stress within electrical injury in comparison to combat exposed Veterans

Abstract: Researchers have yet to form conclusions about the mechanism of injury within electrical injury (EI) and the relationship between injury factors, and chronic psychological symptoms. EI patients report consistent psychological complaints including hyperarousal and emotional dysregulation post-injury leading victims of electrical injury to be diagnosed with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). There has been a limited investigation into how electrical injury victims experience PTSD symptomatology and if their manifestation of posttraumatic stress symptomatology is congruent with other patient populations experiencing PTSD. This cross-sectional study compared a sample of 35 individuals with EI with a sample of veterans with mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) and PTSD as well as a sample of combat exposed veterans without PTSD. The goal of this study is to elucidate the phenomenology of PTSD symptomatology of EI patients by comparing their symptom reporting to other groups that have experienced traumatic events.
