Researching the needs of the Royal Navy submariner community

Abstract:This qualitative study, commissioned by the Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust and conducted by NatCen, explores the support needs of Royal Navy submariner families, particularly under the strain of prolonged separation. Through interviews and focus groups with family members, third-sector representatives, and statutory professionals, the research captures the emotional, social, and logistical challenges that families face—from mental health strain and low service awareness to spousal career setbacks and lack of extended family inclusion. The findings highlight gaps in current provision and have directly informed the design of a targeted AFCFT grant programme to enhance communication, mental health services, community cohesion, post-deployment support, and career development for spouses.
