Abstract:The diverse mental health needs of U.S. military veterans with depression prompted the creation of an online handbook that combines self-care practices and peer support to offer a novel wellness solution. This systematic literature review highlights the importance of self-care practices to improve the physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being of U.S. military veterans, with a focus on exercise, green space, sleep, eating, self-talk, journaling, guided imagery, conversing with others, meditation, affirmations, and prayer. The review also identifies how literature supports the collaboration of peer veteran reinforcement to encourage healthy behaviors through mentorship practices, participation in self-care activities, fostering accountability, and reinforcement/reminders of shared military values. Additionally, the literature identifies accessibility, integration with primary care programs, user engagement, and adherence challenges as common themes in studies evaluating the effectiveness of online selfcare practice delivery. As a result of the systematic literature review, an online handbook, Selfcare for Veterans with Depression with Wingman of Choice, provides self-care practices with support from a peer veteran accountability partner. The project offers a U.S. military veteran with a depression-centered emphasis, aiming to enhance mental health engagement through online content paired with peer veteran support to encourage healthy behaviors.
