Quantifying health gains in the Veteran community: Analyzing the impact of Team RWB activities on key health indicators in Veterans
Abstract: Notably, at the study’s onset, the participants, which were newly-joined Team RWB members, were generally more unhealthy than the general population. They displayed higher baseline inflammation, poorer lipid profiles, and elevated glucose levels compared to a general cohort, with over 90% classified as overweight or obese. However, after engaging in Team RWB activities for six months, 80% of participants improved their ELS scores by an average of 18%, while a control group saw only a 3% increase. Furthermore, 41% of participants reduced their at-risk biomarkers, and 68% improved their BMI, with an average reduction of nearly 2%. These results underscore the powerful, measurable impact of community-based health and wellness programs—such as those provided by Team RWB—on our nation’s Veterans. Additionally, the study highlights the importance of in-person engagement, as it significantly correlated with higher ELS scores compared to virtual events. These findings suggest that community-driven, holistic approaches to Veteran health—emphasizing physical activity, mental well-being, and social connection—are essential for improving long-term health outcomes. For leaders in the Veteran nonprofit sector, researchers, and policymakers, this study offers compelling evidence for the efficacy of community-based wellness initiatives. The data supports the increased allocation of resources towards programs that foster social connection and promote physical activity, recognizing their critical role in enhancing Veteran health. Moreover, the validation of the ELS provides a valuable tool for evaluating and improving the impact of Veteran-focused programs nationwide. Given the initial health disparities observed in the study participants, this research underscores the urgent need for accessible, effective wellness programs tailored to the unique needs of the Veteran community. By leveraging the insights gained from this study, stakeholders can work collaboratively to create a healthier future for Veterans, ensuring they have the resources and support necessary to thrive.
