Managing emotional exhaustion in female USAF officers: An evidence-based emotional intelligence training manual

Abstract:The purpose of this project was to synthesize key themes in the literature on emotional intelligence (EI) and emotional exhaustion in female United States Air Force (USAF) officers to develop a conceptual framework for an evidence-based training manual, implementation plan, and program evaluation plan. USAF culture can incorporate high workload, burnout, demanding responsibilities, and discrimination. This project focused on identifying literature on female USAF officers' experiences of emotional exhaustion due to personal responsibilities, gender-based discrimination, and work-related demands, especially during deployment. Data collected through the PRISMA protocol revealed 31 studies that were analyzed using six steps of thematic analysis and produced four themes: (a) the significance of self-awareness in EI training, (b) emotional regulation as a core component of EI training, (c) building resilience to mitigate emotional exhaustion, and (d) mindfulness-based EI training to reduce emotional exhaustion. The findings revealed that mindfulness practices, cognitive and emotional reappraisal, and self-awareness exercises can be integrated into a training manual to decrease levels of emotional exhaustion among female USAF officers. The project concluded with an implementation plan of the EI training manual and recommendations for future research.
