Harassment and discrimination: A snapshot of regular force members’ experiences in the Canadian Armed Forces

Abstract: As part of the Department of National Defence (DND) and the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) code of Values and Ethics,1 the organization should support a work environment that “fosters teamwork and encourages individuals to contribute their best effort,” therefore “mutual trust, support and respect for the dignity and rights of every person are essential characteristics of this environment.” External reviewers have suggested that the CAF, due to its male-dominated workplace, has traditionally occupied a hypermasculine culture.2 While progress has been made with evolving policies to improve inclusivity in the CAF,3,4 women remain a minority in the CAF leaving them more at risk of experiencing harassment and discrimination in the workplace.2,5 As such, to meet the CAF’s goal of creating a safe working environment and improving the overall culture, it is important to monitor members’ experiences of harassment and discrimination, which can be conducted using data collection tools, such as surveys.
